Yang Ou wins first race Print

Milwaukee (15 AUG '10) - Very often he was the unlucky person and not able to bring his definitly good pace home. But today was his day. Yang Ou led 196 of 200 miles. Not only that: he led the last mile. On the other side you have to say that it wasn't that easy for Ou to bring it home and get the points into dry cloths.

In the qualification Shaun Stoud was able to get the pole with a very good lap time of 21.734 seconds. With that he was already 0.146 ahead of second Joey Schmidt. Oval specialist Niles Anders was not able to post a time so that he had to start from the last position - P16.

When the green flag dropped Niles started his black and purple rocket and made his way through the field while Stroud had problem to hold his lead. In race trim Stroud was not that fast as his quali promised which opend the door for Ou, who startet in fifth, to take the lead. Behind him Joey Schmidt showed a very good performance since he was the only one in the first half of the race who came closest to Ou's performance.

After the start it was a good long green run until lap 34 when Ryan Heeter lost his rear end in turn 4. Propably he went to far up into the grey there. Turn 4 has shown to be the most dangerous place at the famous Milwaukee Mile. A lot of other drivers had several moments when they slid up, had smaller and bigger wiggels as well as some spins. Niles Anders who fighted himself already up to P2 lost the place when he made a 360 coming off of turn 4 in lap 75. He dropped again to the end of the field... When he fought back to the front and stayed out in one of the next yellows he came together with Aleksi Elomaa in turn one and ended his chase in the walls. A tough end for a demanding race.

Trough the whole race many cars had ups and downs. Henrik Müller who started from P9 went backwards from the start and did better and better after the first pist stops during the first caution. In the end he finished second. As already mentioned Stroud struggled to hold his pace but found a way to come back and ended in P3. Sean Graham, last season Indy 500 winner, had many ups and downs so he way lucky to finish in P5. Finn Aleksi Elomaa recovered from his starting problems and finished in P4 after fighting in the front pack (behind lead Ou) for the second half of the race.

Many drivers in the back of the field had problems with their setups also. Daniel Olszewski spun in lap 47 and was able to keep it away from the wall but not from Daniel Ensch who had to retire. Olzweski worked with his setup for the rest of the race and added front wing on his pit stops. Andrew Aitken touched the wall which made him to retire too. Mr. consistency Jeffrey York gave all he could but in the end he had to give his car beaten. In lap 136 he lost it after a long fight. New comer Phillip Ellis did a great job racing in P3 behind Ou and Schmidt but he sadly was not able to finish due to technical problems.

In the end the race saw drama again: iamINDY.de champion Doyle who made his way up to P2 and has proven himself to be the only driver able to stop Ou overdid it. With only five laps to go Doyle was less than two seconds behind leader Ou. But then he pushed too hard, gave his car too much weight jacker, came a little up into the gray in turn 4 and spun into the wall. Because of the debris in turn 4 and on the frontstraight the safty crew was not able to clean the track in time so that the race finished behind the pace car under yellow.

All in all it was again a very long but also a very clean race. Tim Doyle drove the fastest lap with a time of 22.161 seconds. After overtaking polesitter Stoud the winner Ou led for the rest of the race. The longest green flag run had 50 laps!

In two weeks the iamINDY.de series is heading to the road course of Watkins Glen. Can last season winner Tim Doyle defend his victory? Stay tuned.
