“Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines ! ”
The greatest spectacle in the world now heats up drivers & spectators in the off-season On 5th December 2010 the iamINDY.de series comes back to where the IndyCars where born: the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Already the start is a unique and exciting challenge. Three cars side-by-side in eleven rows is probably the fastest and also most dangerous traffic jam of the world. Originally the cars started 5-abreast in the first 500 mile race which took place in 1911 on a loose gravel track. Of course it was Ray Harroun who won in the famous “Marmon Wasp” that year. Soon the officials decided it would be too dangerous and changed to a 4-abreast line up until they again reduced it to the until today used 3-abreast mode. The reason why there are “only” 33 cars allowed on track while other series have more than 40 is also a bit of a comical piece of living history: the sanctioning body AAA was looking for a formula to calculate the maximum allowed car number in the 1910’s, when racing was extremely dangerous, and came to the conclusion that a car every 400 feet just “sounds about right”. After the rule was proposed the number of entered cars went up and down for many years until the promoters decided to adapt the rule in 1934 in order to get a stable number. Since then the race started with 33 cars lined up 3-wide in 11 rows.
Strong group of local drivers
In this seasons Indy 500 there are drivers from 10 countries from Europe and North America. The strongest group of all is certainly the group from Indiana (USA) with 8 drivers. Beside that there are also two brothers in the grid with a well-known name which has strong relationships with IndyCars history. Todd and Cary Bettenhausen are the sons of 11 time Indy 500 starter Tony Bettenhausen, Jr. Beside that there are drivers with an age from 15 to 61 years. Additional there is also one woman in the starting grid: Monica Clara Brand from Romania tries to win their first bottle of milk
Certainly the 200 laps race is has its own unwritten rules. But when you just look at the numbers top favorites for the race are the record setting John Paquin and his chasers like Rhawn Black, Marty Sponsler, Yang Ou, Shaun Stroud or Tim Doyle who all are very close to his speed. However, already the 1st 500 in May has shown that you need more than speed. Sean Graham was fast and also he had the lucky hand to bring it home...
